This is the last installment of the restaurants recommended to me on FB. There were many suggestions, but there isn't such a thing as a bad M&C.
The pasta was cooked in unsalted water unless otherwise noted. Show me a cookbook that tells you to cook pasta in unsalted water.
It's called Mac & Cheese for a reason. Macaroni & Cheese. Not random pasta shapes. From Wikipedia: "The word "macaroni" is often used synonymously with elbow-shaped macaroni, as it is the variety most often used in macaroni and cheese recipes".
I tried the Buff Mac at Friendly Toast in the Burlington Mall. The $17.50 dish was made with cavatappi pasta, VT cheddar, crispy chicken with buffalo sauce, bleu cheese, shredded carrots, and scallions. However, I asked them to hold the carrots and scallions. What were they thinking? The pasta was cooked well, and the sauce was delicious with blue cheese and buffalo sauce. The chicken was crispy but dry, with a strange texture, possibly due to mechanical tenderizing or being processed meat. 7/10
Indulge in Mac & Cheese at Newtowne in Billerica for just $14.95! This delicious dish features a creamy 4-cheese blend with a crispy Ritz cracker topping. For an extra kick, add buffalo chicken for only $2 (though the menu may say $4, the bill says otherwise!). The pasta is perfectly cooked, and the chicken is incredibly tender. While the sauce is creamy, some may prefer a stronger buffalo flavor. The scrumptious garlic bread, which is fresh and crusty, completes this delicious meal. 8/10
I tried the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese (21) at Jake and Joe's in Woburn. It featured crispy chicken, chopped bacon, buffalo sauce, and a crumb topping, served with a garlic knot. While the crumb topping was light, the generous serving of tender chicken made up for it. The shells were a tad overcooked, but the buffalo sauce had a pleasant taste, though I would have preferred more spice. The warm garlic knot was a delicious addition. 7/10
At The Establishment (75 Princeton St, North Chelmsford), indulge in their delectable Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese priced at $18.99. Don't be fooled by its appearance; it arrives in a satisfying bowl size. The perfectly cooked cavatappi pasta is coated in a cheesy sauce with melted cheese on top, accompanied by generous portions of tender chicken. If you prefer a bolder buffalo flavor, simply request extra sauce. Additionally, the attentive service includes a rare sight: a lemon slice placed inside your water glass. Outstandingly good garlic bread. 9/10
Evviva Trattoria in Stoneham serves up their Mac N' Cheese for $15.50, boasting a cheese blend, fresh herbs, breadcrumbs, and the option to add bacon for $4 extra. Unfortunately, the promise of fresh herbs fell short, and the bacon portion was disappointingly small. While the pasta was cooked to al dente perfection and the sauce was adequately cheesy, this made this Mac N' Cheese experience merely passable. No bread was offered today, either. 7/10
And the Winners are, in no particular order, based on places I have returned to: My Diner in Melrose, Tavern In the Square in Burlington, Local 438 in Stoneham, Newtowne in Billerica. Not sure if TiTS should be included since I only go there when I get $10 off.
As Good As It Gets, Burlington. Never opened.
The Pickled Onion Beverly. Recommended but not open for lunch.
Wenham tea house. Strongly recommended, but not on the menu.
Fat Cat Restaurant Quincy No Parking, Too Expensive. Too far.
Copper Door in Salem, NH. Recommended but not on the menu.
Garrison's in North Billerica is just a plain version; I didn't try it.
The Yardhouse in Burlington. It wasn't an M&C but a MAC + CHEESE.
Purple Carrot Bread Co. Lowell. Family size for short money. Great! However, the pasta was soo overcooked that it was just mush. Tried it twice, and the same thing happened.
Tremezzo Pizza Wilmington. Recommended, but not really a dine-in place.
Glad to hear you rated Jaimes in North andover had great Mac & Cheese. They were annialated by the flood water last week and will need all the support they can get.

DeletePeter, thank you very much for posting your 3 stories on Mac & Cheese. Great to see you back, even if it is only occasionally! I appreciated all the hard work (and money) that you did in visiting so many places in the past. That is dedication! I'd be surprised if you did not gain mucho pounds as a result.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised too, but I didn't gain anything. It was also done over quite some time. Like, one per week.
Deletecan't wait to see what's next on the horizon.
DeleteThanks for your dedication.
