Black Horse Tavern Winchester only serves lunch on Fri-Sun, but that information is not available on their website. Neither is their menu, lunch or dinner or opening hours. The way I found out was by looking at their Zomato page. They also don't have public WIFI and that's kind of unheard of in these times. To top it off, no strollers are allowed inside!
They are located between the post office and the railway station, and yes, there is trains thundering by outside.
The menu said Crispy Fried Haddock Sandwich ($14) and I ordered it with house cut fries. "Fresh fillet dipped in our Black Horse Brew beer batter and topped with Jack Cheese. Served on a toasted baguette with coleslaw and tartar sauce". Further reading of the menu showed that the baguette was really a ciabatta baguette. Now, what the heck is that? I know what ciabatta are and I know what a baguette are and never shall the two meet. The slaw was OK as was the tartar sauce. Half of the hand cut fries was seriously greasy, but the rest was fine. Guess what happens when you put cheese on "Crispy Fried Haddock" and then heat the whole thing up to melt the cheese. Right, no crispy fish. Not sure about the texture of the fish, it was on the drier side and could have been previously frozen.
Interior was nice enough and the place promptly filled up.
Big nice bar area with a number of high tops. Service was fine, but I don't think the quality of the food justifies the prices.
