I have been aware of Kitty's Restaurant in North Reading for a long time but have been hesitant to try it. It seemed to be one of those old school steakhouses that are everywhere. When someone recommended their pork chop, I decided to give it a try.
Big ugly building with a humongous parking lot.
The interior was surprisingly bright and clean. There are Keno slips on every table. They weren't very busy on a Friday lunch.
A big bar in the other room. They have a dedicated cash register for the gambling.
You can add a side salad for 1.95, and I ordered a Caesar salad. What does this have in common with a regular Caesar salad? Well, both have croutons. The romaine was absent, the dressing was wrong and the croutons were rock hard. The Parmesan was out of a supermarket can. You also get bread (cold) and butter (cold).
I did order the Broiled Pork Chops (w/ Vinegar Peppers and Fried Onions) 14.75. You had lots of choices for the sides and for potato you could have mash or potatoes in a cheese sauce. Unfortunately, I went with the potatoes in a cheese sauce. The good news was that the unseasoned pork chops were on the bone and cooked nicely. The vinegar peppers were dry, and after picking out the shriveled pieces of onion, I was left with one small piece, that hadn't been fried at all.
This was the potatoes in a cheese sauce that had completely separated. The waitress didn't think anything was wrong but replace this with mashed potatoes.
When she delivered the mashed potatoes, she immediately asked if I needed more butter. The mashed potatoes were suspiciously smooth and didn't really taste much of potatoes. Four packets of butter, plenty of salt and pepper made it somewhat palatable. Service was OK, my waitress seemed to be blind and had trouble reading the menu when I was asking questions.
I have a friend who goes here, and when I ask what he had, the answer is always Steak. What does that mean? It turns out that they serve a 20oz sirloin for $24. Now there is plenty of cuts of sirloin, but only two are considered prime, and you will not get those for $24. They also proudly announce on the menu that it's *CHAIRMAN’S RESERVE SIRLOIN STEAK. I asked the waitress what this meant and after much research, it turns out that CHAIRMAN’S RESERVE is the company they buy the beef from.
