Avana Sushi III in Reading opened in what used to be a fish market that also served food, mostly fried seafood. They have two other locations in Boston.
It's small storefront on Main Street. Very sparse on-street parking, but there is communal parking nearby.
It's a small place, with cheap plastic chairs, except at the sushi bar and at the window. It was very cold inside, and as the place filled up, extremely loud.
I ordered the CHIRASHI ($13.95). "12 pcs of sashimi over seasoned sushi rice", said the online menu, but I could have sworn that the real menu said 14 pcs. Anyway, I got 13. The octopus was freezing and very chewy. The surf clam was OK. The mackerel was dry. The red snapper was OK but cold. The tuna and salmon were both good. The sushi rice was seasoned, but way too cold. I think this was the first time I have gotten a chirashi served on a plate. They have a big selection of Maki and also a few lunch specials. They are also using "white tuna" on the menu, and that's not legal. One or two maki rolls with two sides, $7 and $11 respectively.
They are also operating the fish market.
