Iron Town Diner Saugus

I have been to Iron Town Diner in Saugus several times pre-covid and have been very happy with the food and service. They have daily specials that are posted on their FB page.

Plenty of parking in the shared lot. They still have tables outside.

Bar and dining area. Even when they are busy, there is usually one seat left at the bar.

There are a couple more dining areas.

Friday's special was Roast Leg of Lamb (18). "Slow roasted leg of lamb sliced to order served with roast potatoes and choice of vegetable". We don't have roasted potatoes, my waitress said. So I went with mashed and homefries. The lamb arrived with roasted potatoes! I wish I would have gotten the homefries since even if the mashed is the real deal, it's terrible, unseasoned, and watery. The roasted potatoes verged on overcooked and were totally unseasoned. Where is the lemon? Still better than the mashed. They have an unusual gravy that has big pieces of veggies in it. It's surprisingly tasty. The lamb was excellent, and plenty of it. I always order extra sauce on the side since you can never have too much sauce. 07/30/21

Two Eggs Over Corned Beef Hash ($13). I chose sourdough since the light rye is not available anymore. The bread was fresh, lightly buttered with butter, and toasted. The homefries were unseasoned and now have the skins left on. They also had been left on the griddle until one side was black and burnt. My over-easy eggs were cooked right. But because they were griddled, they were more like poached eggs than fried eggs. The hash was OK but completely lacked texture. Big pieces of potatoes, and I didn't see or taste any onions. This is not how I remember the hash. Now I wonder if they are still making their own? 09/02/21

The special of the day was Bacon Jalapeno Mac N Cheese ($13). "Our traditional Mac N Cheese loaded with bacon and a hint of jalapenos served in a large bowl. Served with garlic bread". This looked good, but the top layer was congealed. Not sure how that could happen since it did come out pretty fast. The pasta underneath was creamy but was severely overcooked to the point that there was no texture left. The cheese part was very bland and didn't taste much of cheese at all. There was plenty of nicely cooked bacon. Occasionally I got a taste of jalapeno. The garlic bread was garlicky, but it was also stale with a rock-hard crust. It was a huge bowl. The service here was always impeccable and friendly. 09/28/21

I was going to add a few more dishes to this writeup, but due to recent experiences, that will not happen. Not going back. Not sure what happened, but they used to be really good.
