Elephant Walk South End in Boston has been open just for a short while after their other Boston location lost their space due to an apartment building being put up in that location. I have been going to the Elephant Walk since they opened in a basement in Union Square. They also have another location in Cambridge. They have always had a menu in two parts, one Cambodian and the other French. The Mother, who opened the first restaurant was Cambodian and was trained in classical French Cuisine.
They have a nice location in the South End, but parking can be sparse. Today was a perfect day to have the big doors open and let the nice breeze in.
We started with some Rouleaux ($10) (available vegan with Shiitake mushroom). Crispy Cambodian spring rolls served with greens, herbs and tuk trey for dipping. You put a spring roll into the lettuce, add mint and bean sprouts, roll the whole thing up and dip it into the tuk trey, and you have a delicious little bundle.
This was followed by a Crêpe Au Canard ($12) with an added egg, sunny side up. A French crepe filled with duck braised in soy tamarind juices, portobello mushroom, crème frâiche, scallion, dressed baby greens, said the online menu. The crepe with the duck and the sauce were really good, and the egg added a nice lusciousness to the dish.
Dessert? Of course, and here is the Tarte Chocolat Au Caramel ($7.5). A pate brisee tartlet filled with semi-sweet chocolate and smooth caramel. This was served with crème anglaise and vanilla ice cream. This was rich and really good.
Interior is cool with a long bar.
There is some nice art on the brick wall in the seating area. This place had a nice and cool vibe that's fitting for the South End.
Thanks to Boston Blog and Tweet for organizing this.
This event was sponsored by the restaurant, but all opinions are my own.
