I have heard about Nijiya Sushi in Medford for a while, and their AYCE Sushi and it was finally time to give them a try for lunch today. I must admit that the newfangled parking meters in Medford are a really good reason for staying away from this town.
The interior is nice and warm and impeccable clean. What's missing? The sushi bar, all the food is prepared in a separate area.
The lunch AYCE Sushi ($13.99 with a $2 surcharge Fri-Sun) also includes cooked items from the kitchen. I tried the Pork Gyoza (good) and the Fried Calamari (rubbery and inedible).
Then on to the good stuff! Tuna, Salmon, Red Snapper, White Tuna and Salmon Roe Nigiri. The white tuna was correctly labeled as Escolar on the menu. The fish was impressively fresh and really tasty, and the rice was seasoned correctly, and more importantly, packed correctly, so you don't get a dense lump of rice. It was also generously cut slices of fish.
And then for some fun stuff! Eel, Octopus, Surf Clam and Squid Nigiri. This was all good, and even the octopus was almost tender, and this isn't easy to archive. The squid was excellent.
