I don't get to Taqueria El Amigo in Waltham often enough, but today was such a beautiful day that I decided to cruise down there for some lunch. This small Mexican restaurant serving excellent food is a hidden gem in Waltham.
They are easy to miss unless you know where they are. At lunch, you can also look for customers sitting outside waiting for their takeout.
Free chips and salsa arrive promptly. The less said about the chips, the better, but the salsa is outstanding and fairly hot. Not sure if you have a choice or not but this is fine for me.
They now offer guacamole ($2.50) and this was new to me, so I decided to try it. It was a good amount with lots of avocados but needed a bit more seasoning. A couple of teaspoons of the salsa mixed in took care of that.
The Tacos Especiales Plate is now a whopping $7. You can mix two and two, so I picked Pork and Chili and Beef Cheeks. They come on double corn tortillas and are sprinkled with onions and cilantro and the avocado slice is standard. Both were excellent, but the favorite was the Beef Cheeks. A little bit fatty but very very tasty, It might not look like a lot of food but between the chips and this I was stuffed.
You can request hot sauce on the side and this one is both seriously hot and delicious.
This is it. Fourteen seats, not tables but seats. Get here early for lunch unless you want to wait for a table. The drinks cooler is filled with real Mexican sodas include Coke. Cash only.
