Noodle Market in Arlington took over the space formerly occupied by Sweet Basil.
Looks nice from the outside. I just found out that the big communal parking lot is fifty cents an hour and the newly installed parking meters are $1/hour.
It was pleasant and bright inside, but the tables in the middle are so close together that you can't walk between them if they are occupied.
I started with the Noodle Market Short Ribs (7). "Tender charcoal grilled beef short ribs in a house sweet herbal bbq sauce, served with cucumber salad". The cucumber salad was absent but the ribs were tasty even if they could have done with some more bbq sauce.
I was looking forward to trying the Pho Dac Biet (10). "Beef Noodle Soup with combination of rare eye round, tendon, well done flank and tripe". I ordered the eye round on the side since I saw this done in another place and thought it made sense since it would prevent the beef from being cooked. I didn't really have to worry about that here since the broth wasn't that hot to start with. The noodles were very soft, and the unseasoned flank was tender. The tendons were done well. The finely sliced tripe could have done with a bit less cooking, it lacked texture. The eye round was very chewy. The broth itself tasted faintly of star anise, but that was all. It was really bland, and for a restaurant that does Vietnamese and Thai food, it was a dismal dish. I have to go back and try the Thai dishes, hopefully they will be better.
