Gustazo Waltham

Gustazo Cuban Restaurant & Cafe relocated here from Belmont a while ago and took over the space vacated by Elephant Walk when they closed. Well, they took over about half the space. Gustazo used to be in the space now occupied by Tony G's BBQ, not sure how long they will be there.

They are located on Main Street in Waltham and the windows are overlooking the Commons and there is free on-street parking or there is City Parking just around the corner, but that's not free.

The soup of the day sounded really interesting so I couldn't resist and ordered it. "Potaje de Garbanzos w. Morcilla, Chorizo and Calabazza" (3.5). It was splendid and chock full of stuff. It was just a cup, but it was loaded.

I had the Cubano (10) when they were in Belmont and remember thinking that it was way overpriced for what you got but for this version I happily pay full price. "Slow roasted pork, smoked ham, dijon, pickles, pimenton dulce aioli, gruyere cheese, pressed on baguette". Seriously big sandwich on a very fresh baguette and full of tasty pork and ham. Excellent version of a classic. They have a good selection of sandwiches at lunch and all of the were BIG. The only negative was that the sandwich arrived 30 seconds after the soup.

The inside was pleasant and bright in the front, but the back looked a bit dark. The posters on the wall are reproductions of movie posters from the yearly film festival that's held in Havanna, made by a local artist. Local to Havanna, that is.

This is the other dining room. They did a brisk business at lunchtime and I'm not really surprised. The fish, today for the fish sandwich, was wild caught cod. I'll be back for more sandwiches, this one is a keeper. Cudos to the staff for packing up my leftovers so nicely.
