El Potro Malden

El Potro in Malden is the latest addition to this chain of Mexican Restaurants in Mass.

It's a bit off the beaten path in Malden but they have plenty of parking across the street. Not a very exciting outside.

Inside was bright and colorful with plenty of seating in the bar.

Lots of seating in the dining areas on the other side of the wall.

Nice and warm chips with salsa arrive promptly. The chips were very nice, thin and crisp and the salsa had a bit of heat to it but the onions in the salsa were very very sharp like the onions had been cut five minutes ago and then dumped in.

No lunch specials were available and their prices are a bit on the high side, most are in the $11-$15 range. I went with the Combo Plate ($14.99). One Taco, one Chile Relleno and one Enchilada served with rice and refried beans and a seriously spicy Pico de gallo. I asked about fillings and was told: "It's all Chicken". For all the other entrees you had a choice of fillings. The Taco shell was broken and the Enchilada was just chicken with cheese and a trace of some red sauce. The smallish Chile Relleno was packed with chicken and seriously spicy. The sauce on top seemed to be a stewed onion and pepper mix. Normally, a Chile Relleno is deep fried but not here. The refried beans were watery but the rice was nice and fluffy even if it was a bit bland. It was expensive even if it was a big plate and I really have to stop going to these "Mexican" places, it never works out.
