Virsa De Punjab in Bedford opened recently in a location that was previously occupied by a fairly mediocre BBQ joint.
The outside looked very neat and I forgot to ask what the name meant. You can never have too many Indian restaurants and there is now not a dearth of them around me. Woburn has two, same for Burlington and now, Bedford.
The inside was bright and looked really nice with linen table cloth and napkins. They did a good job considering it's just a big square room.
The weekday lunch buffet is $11.95. I counted 15 different items, not including the dessert and salads, on the buffet.
Salad and condiments. Yes, there is sliced chilis to the right and a fiercely looking chutney as well.
The table setting was really nice and of very good quality. My water got refilled promptly even if they could not see the water level in my mug. Did I mention linen napkins?
Not sure if you have a choice but garlic naan promptly arrived. I was happy to get just a couple of pieces since I hate to waste a lot of bread. The bread was OK could have been a bit crispier for me.
First trip to the buffet. The Tandoori chicken rests on some nice fried basmati rice. The Tandoori chicken was freshly cooked and nice and moist but could have done with some more seasoning. Next, we have Chicken 65 that was very good and pretty spicy. Chicken Dhaba was tender and tasty. The kidney beans were nice and I really liked the potatoes and eggplant. The Saag was nicely spiced but on the salty side. Last we have the Kali Mirch Ka Tikka, chicken cooked in the tandoori and marinated with black pepper, yogurt and spices. This dark meat dish was really savory and cooked perfectly, still very moist and tender. All the items on the buffet were nice and hot and everything was cooked really well and nicely spiced. What a nice addition to our dining scene and just a short ride from home.
Update: On a subsequent visit the spoon and the linen napkins had disappeared. The food, however, was still excellent. They had fish pakora on the buffet and it was nicely spiced and still moist.
