I have heard good things about Ernie's Lunch in Melrose, so it was time to have breakfast for lunch again.
They are small on the outside. There is some on-street parking, but there is also plenty of parking next to the tracks on this side.
Guess what? They are small on the inside too. The inside is well preserved and impeccably clean.
I decided on the two eggs with hash and home fries ($6) with Italian toast. The toast was toasted nicely and buttered all over, not just in the middle. I hate that. The hash was not homemade, but tasty and cooked crispy. The potatoes were really well seasoned, but they were mushy. My over easy eggs was just eggs cooked on two sides. How do I know? The yolk had set on both the bottom and top. Most of the yolk was still runny. Can't anybody fry an egg anymore? It supposed to be crispy on the bottom and then quickly flipped to set the top. The service was very friendly.
All the takeout and personal business were conducted on the rotary phone near the entrance.
